LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENING IN 6-2

During one of our "Keyboarding Classes", three of our students were given the assignment of writing (typing) about what is going on in 6-2. They didn't look at their keyboards at all while typing and below is what they came up with! They also found the pics!

ELA

Curious about what’s going on in 6.2 English? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Here’s the current buzz: We just finished the popular novel Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. The book’s about an 11 year old orphan who runs away from all of his problems, and gets into some trouble along the way. 6.2 did lots of open responses, while reading this book, that will help in preparing us for ELA MCAS in the Spring. Right now, there’s talk of watching Maniac Magee the movie.

Now that we’re already into term 3, we’re doing lots of practice open responses, some of which are straight from the MCAS. We'd read a short story, or article, answer some multiple-choice questions about it, and write an open response. Then, we look at some examples of a 1, 2, 3, or 4 (1 being the worst, 4 being the best) of the open response, and try to grade our own.

ELA is very exciting on team 6.2!! Everyone is curious, as to what our teacher, Mr.Varga, will be doing with us next -. Maybe some more reading, maybe a writing assignment, but whatever it is, I know that we’ll have a good time doing it!

MATH

Do you ever wonder what’s going on in team 6.2’s math class? Just read on to find out!
We just finished up negative and positive integers, and now we are onto coordinate graphs and variables. Variables are quantities that can change. They can also be symbolized with letters, like x and y. There are also independent and dependant variables.
An independent variable is when it doesn’t depend on any other variable, and it cannot be stopped. For instance, time doesn’t stop because you don’t see the clock stop ticking!
A dependant variable is a variable that depends on the independent variable. For instance, the number of something that you can do. Example: How many pushups can you do in 30 seconds? The pushups depend on the time, because if you had a longer time to do them, you would most likely get more!
Now, onto coordinate graphs! A coordinate graph is a graph where you plot points to get coordinate pairs.
Coordinate pairs are points labeled on the graph, like ( A,B ). To find a coordinate pair, you go to the x axis on the bottom of the graph, and go up to find the number on the y axis. (Left side of the graph)
So, do you have a pretty good image of what we are doing in math? Hopefully you do, because we are having a ton of fun!

SOCIAL STUDIES

Are you wondering what’s going on in sixth grade social studies? We just finished our unit on the study of Judaism, and we have moved on to Ancient Greece. Though we are only a few days into the 12-week unit, our classes have already learned so much!
Greece is an interesting place with a rich history. Did you know that the country of Greece isn’t actually called Greece? It’s called the Hellenic Republic, which you can see on any official map. Back in ancient times, the country was called Hellas, until the Romans conquered it and renamed it Greece.
Also, our classroom has been split up into five poleis, Sparta, Athens, Corinth, Argive, and Megara. The polis we belong to determines where we sit. We have been working hard to create a polis logo and a polis pledge. Social Studies is already a fun subject, and this unit is sure to make it even better!

SCIENCE

Science is great in sixth grade! We are learning about the human body and the digestive tract! We have discussed mechanical and chemical digestion, enzymes, and much more. Science is made interesting by many hands on experiments with beakers and chemicals such as Benedict’s Solution and Lugol Solution. Another thing we’ve been doing is writing to get ready for MCAS in the Spring. Science is getting really interesting this year!
